I am currently studying the representation of women in westerns for a piece for my coursework. Does anyone else feel they are unfairly represented as whores, housewives, etc. rather than being shown as heroines of the story. AND When they are shown as heroes of the film such as in Annie get your guns, Calamity Jane, Cat Ballou etc, they are not taken seriously because of the nature of the ...

I keep looking, but cannot find. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but whips and chains excite me.

If you want to see Dean Martin in a good western film I highly recommend Rough Night in Jericho. In it he plays an evil town boss and pulls it off rather well too.

Will (or has) Station West (1948) ever be released on DVD? Decent Film, good cast. Not a typical Western though. this the link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040835/

(Something I posted on the Classic Film Board) -------------------------------------------------- ------ These are some westerns I've always had a (perhaps inexplicable!) fondness for: INCIDENT AT PHANTOM HILL (1966) -- Robert Fuller is the steel jawed hero, Dan Duryea the scenery devouring villain, Claude Akins and Noah Beery Jr handle character duties. THE RIDE TO HANGMAN'S TREE (...

cell phones and the internet? because they make the world smaller nobody in westerns ever had the chance to call for help on a cell phone when they were pursued by indians, a posse, rival ranchers, etc... and that's, what made the " western" movie

My wife is going insane and will take me with her unless I find this movie!. A western wherein the story a celebration is being held in a town for it's "founder". During the film, an old woman tells a tale to a female reporter about how how her husband was not the man that people think him to be. The old woman was actually the one who founded the town. Husband was a gambler, drinker. In one ...

One thing about Westerns that I've been contemplating about and trying to put a finger on is what exactly is different about todays Westerns. For some reason they don't seem the same as the Classics and you read what various posters say comments like "they don't make them like they used to", or "they don't know how to make them anymore". Besides some of the obvious differences i.e. steady/shaky ...

Its been called the "most Italianate of American Westerns" by some critics (more so than Eastwoods contemporary Hang em High) and I'll have to admit it really starts off like gangbusters, after the unusual opening credits sequence (its shot to resemble an oil painting looking as if the film is being projected upon a canvas). Director was Gordon Douglas who did "Rio Conchos", "Chuka", "Them", ...

It's been nearly a week now since the Boetticher box set has been out. And in my humble opinion the box may be Boetticher's but treasure inside is all Randolph Scott! I say this not to demean the collaboration between these 2 greats but to advocate that Scott was riding high in the saddle and shooting straight with quality westerns even before this teaming was a glint in anybody's eye. So what ...
