It's fake money. We are each given $100 from our teacher and then for each test we are "charged" $5 (of the pretend cash). It is their way of showing us the in the real world you have to stick to budgets for research. The only money I ACTUALLY had to pay was lab fees and units. Oh, and books which were a tad over $300 and one I JUST opened for the first time on Thurs (with only 8 classes left)....
