In the "Phillies in World Series?" thread, I made mention about how effective Derek Lowe's sinker was until the error seemed to affect his concentration. Pitchers with good sinkers can go innings without having a ball hit into the air, as Lowe did last night.   This got me thinking. What is the most effective pitch that you have ever seen thrown? I mean, the one that could be ...

I've always loved the slider, because it can be thrown hard and it can break, and it goes to show, that for the last out of game 7 i want lidge in there throwing his, but it barely leads a good old hamels changup Jesus is my leader and saviour

It's  Steve Carlton's curve ball.  Hey Granpop, miller is leaving, they started a club called DNRTB, you have to sign up, after all, you're the one who hated me first...

This one's obvious i'm surprised no one's mentioned it yet. How bout Mo Rivera's cutter? In general, if the knuckler is thrown right all the time (which it never is) it can be a very nasty pitch. When Mike Schmidt was at the plate it would be the hanging slider, he could never hit it. All levity aside though, I would say guys like Josh Beckett and Jason Schmidt who throw upper 90's heat, when they unleash a 90mph changeup where the bottom falls out or it tails down and away with the same arm motion.

I'd rate 'em as follows:   Slider from Steve Carlton, Bob Gibson, or Randy Johnson. Screwball from Juan Marichal or Pedro Martinez. Doc Gooden's curve. Sam McDowell's fastball.   Webster's defines "maverick as...“An unbranded range animal, especially a calf that has become separated from its mother, traditionally considered the property of the ...

A Greg Maddux circle change up in his prime comes to mind. “The academic community has in it the biggest concentration of alarmists, cranks and extremists this side of the giggle house.”
